Quick Facts: In Aug 2012, Peterborough City Council selected Viridor as its preferred bidder for a 30yr waste processing agreement. The contract was signed in Febr 2013, at which time it was also announced that a JV of Babcock & Wilcox Volund and Interserve Construction had been selected as the lead equipment supplier. The 85,000 tpy project at Fengate Industrial Centre, Peterborough, began construction in Oct 2013 and completed to schedule in Dec 2015. The cost was £72mn.

Quick Facts: In May 2011, MVV Energie contracted Imtech NV to provide engineering services for an EfW, CHP project at North Yard, Devonport. In Feb 2012, the Plymouth City Council approved the planning application, and, in Apr 2011, MVV signed a waste management contract with South West Devon Waste Partnership for MSW supply from Plymouth, Devon and Torbay. The air-cooled plant has a traveling-grate boiler system and pollution control equipment from LAB SA. Design throughput is 245,000 tpy. The Plymouth EfW project went into full operation in Jan 2016 and cost about £188mn. Annual production is expected to be 190,000 MWh or electricity and 60,000 MWt of heat. The thermal host is Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth, considered the oldest and largest naval base in Europe.

Quick Facts: This plant is owned by the Manx Department of Infrastructure and managed by SITA. It has two incinerators; the primary incinerator uses a water-cooled grate and a secondary incinerator can handle up to 5,000 tonnes of clinical, animal and oil waste. In combination, the facility processes all of the Island's residual domestic and commercial waste and produces approximately 7% of the Island's electricity.

Quick Facts: In 2002, Cory was awarded a 30yr contract with the Western Riverside Waste Authority (WRWA) to handle over 500,000 tpy of MSW from four central London boroughs, Lambeth, Wandsworth, Hammersmith and Fulham, plus the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Cory also holds contracts with the City of London and Westminster Council. The EPC contract to VRI was signed in Feb 2007 with Fichtner acting as owner's engineer. Main site construction began in Jul 2008 and the project was handed over in Oct 2011. Finance is by a term facility of up to £470m by the Bank of Ireland, Barclays Capital and Calyon as joint lead arrangers plus approximately £80mn of equity finance. Metso supplied its DNA automation system for the project, which is the largest, single-unit EFW block in the UK. Almost all the MSW is barge delivered in enclosed containers.

Quick Facts: This project was built by a JV of Viridor and INOVYN (formerly INEOS ChlorVinyls) with funding from a combination of public and private finance. The facility is operated by Viridor and has a design throughput of up to 850,000 tpy of RDF processed per a recovery and waste management partnership contract with the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA).  Heat supply is about 51 MW for exclusive use by INOVYN. The first block at Runcorn commissioned on 10 Mar 2014 and the second was handed over in the the fall of 2015. The total project represents a £452mn investment.

Construction got underway in Sep2003 and the 20-MW plant went online in 2006. It supplies thermal energy for Sheffield’s 40km distrrict heating system, one of the largest in England. Design throughput is 225,000 tpy of refuse.

Design throughput for the two-line plant is 350,000 tpy of MSW. Hot commissioning began in Oct 2014 and the plant was handed over for reliability testing in Jan 2015. The £223mn project was completed to schedule and budget. Over 1.6mn manhours were spent on the EPC work.

Tyseley

Quick facts: The first waste incinerator at Tyseley went online in 1928 and a more modern facility was built in the 1970s. In 1994, a £95mn redevelopment of the site got underway including a new WTE plant. This was finished in Aug 1996 after 29mos of construction and shortly afterwards, the old plant was retired to comply with new EU air quality regulations. An award-winning lighting system illuminates the plant at night. The two-stream incinerator has a combined capacity of over 350,000 tpy of MSW and a 15yr Non-Fossil Fuel Obligation (NFFO) contract. A separate clinical waste incinerator shares the gas cleaning equipment with the main plant.
