Quick Facts: This was the largest single-unit WTE plant in the UK at completion. Throughput is 500,000 tpy of municipal refuse and the facility can also supply up to 65,000 tpy of sorted materials for recycling. In 2000, Kent County Council granted planning permission for the project, which is sited in an abandoned ragstone quarry, and the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control permit from the Environment Agency was granted in 2002. Development company Kent Enviropower worked with turnkey project contractor and CFB boiler supplier Lurgi, plus Fortum, the O&M contractor, and the Royal Bank of Scotland, which helped to raise over 150mn in funding.

Quick Facts: IIn March 2011, Viridor announced plans for this EfW plant at Ardley near Bicester. Construction got underway in Nov 2011 and the £200mn plant was synchronized in Aug 2014. 2.1mn manhours were spent on the project. Viridor has a 25yr contract with Oxfordshire County Council to manage 150,000 tpy of MSW. Total throughput is expected to be about 300,000 tpy of MSW.

Quick Facts: In Sep 1999, this new WTE plant was opened by Dundee Energy Recycling, a JV between Dundee City Council and private sector partners, at the Baldovie Industrial Estate northeast of Dundee. The new plant replaced an old incinerator closed in 1996. The £35mn facility processes 120,000 tpy of municipal and commercial waste in two BFB boilers.

Quick Facts: This project on the Cross Green Industrial Esatae near Leeds has a design capacity of 214,000t MSW/yr. The project is part of a £460mn, 25yr deal signed in 2012 between Leeds city council and Veolia. The facility has a 42m high, arched glulam laminated timber frame superstructure believed to be the largest timber structure of its type in Europe. This is clad with translucent polycarbonate sheeting on the north face and has a ture living green wall with about 110,000 various plants on the south elevation. Steam is taken off and used to heat an adjacent administrative block used by platn staff and city workers. The EfW plant went commercial in Apr 2016.

Quick Facts: The National Coal Board developed the first version of the Eastcroft EFW from an old CHP coal-fired plant built by Boots. The incinerator went into operation in 1973. Nottingham signed a MSW contract with FCC unit WRG, who acquired the incinerator in 1992. Throughput is about 150,000 tpy of MSW. Steam is supplied via a 1.5km steam pipe to a turbine installed at the Enviroenergy London Road Energy Centre, center of Nottinghams DHS system.

Up to 56,000 tpy of MSW is burned in a single incineration line with a Cyclergie oscillating kiln. All heat and electricity is sold to an adjacent industrial estate. Grimsby has a dry FGD system.

Quick Facts: In Oct 2005, Lakeside Energy from Waste Ltd reached financial close with investors led by the Bank of Ireland on its £160mn EfW plant at Colnbrook in Slough, Berks. The project is a 50:50 joint venture of Grundon Waste Management Ltd and Viridor Waste Management Ltd. At the same time, the EPC contract was awarded to a consortium of Itochu and Takuma Co Ltd. Fichtner was consulting engineer. Lakeside EfW has a nominal capacity of 400,000 tpy of refuse and was fully commissioned in Jan 2010.
