Solar Thermal Power Plants
Amal West Field
Location: Oman
Operator: Petroleum Development Oman
Capacity: 7 MWt
Operation: 2013
System supplier: GlassPoint Solar
Quick facts: On 21 May 2013, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), and GlassPointSolar commissioned the Middle East’s first solar thermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project at PDO’s Amal West field in southern Oman. The enclosed trough design puts parabolic mirrors inside a glasshouse structure, protecting the collectors from wind, dust, etc., and this enclosure also enables the use of ultra-light, lower-cost reflective materials and automated washing equipment. Low-quality boiler water is used for the once-through steam generators. Construction took 1yr.
