Quick facts: Crn Drim, aka Globocica, is in western Macedonia on the River Crn Drim 30km north of Struga. Initial development and design began in 1957 and construction started in 1960. The plant has a 94.5m rockfill dam and a surface powerhouse on the right bank 7.3km downstream. In May 1998, ELEM signed a loan with IBRD to rehabilitate and modernize this and 5 other hydro power plants in Macedonia. The project was implemented from 2002-2004.

Quick facts: The Kalimanci Reservoir is on the Kamenicka River. The reservoir is also used for irrigation of farmland in Vinica, Kocan, Stip, and Sveti Nikole.

Kozjak
Location: Macedonia

Quick facts: Kozjak is on the River Treska 16km upstream of the Matka hydro plant and 25km from Skopje. The reservoir is now Macedonia’s largest waterbody. The project was first mooted after the 1962 Skopje flood and the scheme was elaborated by Norconsult. Construction finally started in July 1994 and CWE went on the job in Nov 2002. The plant completed in Jul 2004. The plant has a 126m rockfill dam and a 460m headrace tunnel.

Matka Rebuild

Quick facts: Matka on the Treska River was first started up in 1938 at 3.7 MW. It then served as the main electricity source for Skopje. The rebuilt plant was commissioned on 15 Apr 2009.

Quick facts: Spilje is on the Crn Drim near Debar. Construction got underway in 1966 after about 12 yrs of discussion and design. The rockfill dam is 100m high.

Sveta Peka

Quick facts: Sveta Petka on the Treska River was officially opened on 1 Aug 2012 by Prime Ministe Nikola Gruevski and Dr Vlatko Čingoski, General Director of ELEM. Annualoutput is expected to be 66 GWh. The project has a 64m concrete arch dam, the first dam of this kind to be built in the wider region in the last 25yrs. There were over a dozen Macedonian and Slovenian contractors on the €75mn project, which was originally knknw as Matka-II. Sveta Petka completes the Skopsko Pole hydro system, which also includes Kozjak and Matka HPP.
