Quick facts: This large complex on the Dordogne River near Chalvignac has a 92m, curved gravity dam, measuring 289m on the crest. This was part of a large public works program dating to the mid-1920s. Construction on L'Aigle began in 1938 and the first unit was commissioned on 15 Oct 1945. The second powerhouse is on the right bank about 100m downstream and actually located in Correze department.

Grandval

Quick facts: The first investigations for the Grandval Dam started in 1928. From 1941-1943, Forces Motrices de la Truyèr did preliminary preparations for construction and in 1955, EDF took up the project. The dam is 79m high and 350m long with six vaults created by seven buttresses and two spillways.

Fessenheim
Location: Haut-Rhin (Alsace)

Quick facts: This plant was the third built on the Grand Canal d'Alsace following Kembs and Ottamarsheim. Fessenheim was inaugurated by President Rene Coty on 8 Jul 1957. "Le dieu du Rhin ", visible on the facade, is a cement relief by Raymond Couvegnes. The Kaplan turbine to the right of the photo was installed at Kembs from 1933 to 1982. In 1967, Fessenheim was selected as the site for two 750-MW nuclear units.

Kembs
Location: Haut-Rhin (Alsace)

Quick facts: Kembs is on the Grand Canal d’Alsace and comprises the first hydroelectric power plant on the River Rhine between Basel and Lauterbourg. Kembs was built by Energie Electrique du Rhin and nationalized in Apr 1946. In Oct 1944, the barrage was breached by 5t Tallboy bombs dropped at low level. This was done to prevent use of the dam flows to prevent Allied troops approaching from Belfort.

Quick facts: Puylaurent Dam is 73m tall and 220m long and is the largest French dam built during the 1990s. Work started in 1990 and the multipurpose project was dedicated on 9 Jul 1996. The site is in the upper l'Ardeche basin and provides both irrigation services and flow regulation for downstream hydroelectric projects as well as having a small hydro plant at the dam site.
