Cenkova Pila

Quick facts: In the mid-1800s, Prague entrepreneur Cenek Bubenicek founded a saw-mill and a lumber-yard at this location. In 1908, the mill was modernized and three water wheels were installed, two to run frame saws for timber processing and the third for wood-working machinery. The town of Kasperske Hory took over the facility and applied to the local Susice district office for  permission to build a power plant. An order was places with Brown-Boveri in Vienna for the electromechanical equipment and installation. The generator and automatic voltage control system were very advanced for the time. Water passes through an open diversion channel into a 50m water-conduit bridge before entering the powerhouse. The building is registered as a listed historical building by the Czech Ministry of Culture.

Les Kralovstvi Rebuild

Quick facts: This minihydro plant is on the Labe (Elbe) River where two Francis turbines (1.12 MW total) were installed in 1923. The rebuild project included two modern horizontal Francis turbines and synchronous generators, a new control room, and a new control system.

Lipno-I

Quick facts: At 44km long and up to 14km wide, the Lipno reservoir on the Vltava River is the largest artificial lake in the Czech Republic. It is formed by a 26m earthfill and gravity dam. The powerhouse is 160m underground and discharges through a 3.6km tunnel. The plant is connected to the grid at 22kV.

Quick facts: This is said to be the oldest hydropower plant in South Bohemia. The dam on the Cerna River was badly damaged by heavy flooding in 2002. The dam was strengthened and repaired and put back in service. A 557m, 1.35m diameter power tunnel delivers water to the surface powerhouse and two horizontal T/G sets.

Quick facts: The multipurpose Vir Dam on the Svratky River is one of the largest concrete structures in the county. The 75m high dam has a crest length of 390m. It is 50km from Brno and serves for flood control, hydropower and public water supply functions. The 10km long reservoir reaches 55m in depth and flooded several viallages. Prepearatory work bgan in 1947 and the project employed up to 1,400 workers who were housed nearby.

Vranov

Quick facts: The Vranov Dam is on the Dyji River. Construction got underway in Mar 1930 and took 3.5yrs. The poured concrecete gravity dam measures 54m high and has a 290m crest. The base is 27m wide, narrowing to 6m at the top. The right-side penstocks bring water to the dam toe powerhouse. The 2002 Czech floods were the worst in 500yrs at this location and caused damage at various points of the dam and assocated works. A visitor center was opened at Vranov in Jun 2011.
