Quick facts: In Oct 2007, METE advertised for expressions of interest for a hydroelectric plant in Ashta village, Bushat commune, Shkodra district. The Ashta HPP is below the Fierza Dam and the project comprises the fourth and last cascade plant on the Drin River, not far from the Montenegro frontier. In 1996, KESH entered into an agreement with Litostroj for two 42-MW turbines for the scheme, but in the event, the project was re-tendered in Jan 2008. In Jul 2008, a 50:50 joint venture of EVN and Verbund won the tender and later signed a 35yr concession agreement for the Ashta plant. The project cost about €160mn. Two plants were built comprising the largest HPP in the world with HydroMatrix turbines. Ashta-1 (24 MW) generates electricity at the site of a 30yr-old weir at Spathara Reservoir. Ashta-2 (45 MW) was erected at the end of a 5km, low-lying bypass channel. Ashta-1 project started construction in Jan 2010 and commissioned in Sep 2012 and Ashta-2 was handed over in Jun 2013. Annual production from both plants is expected to be about 240 GWh
