Quick facts: When commissioned, this PURPA plant was owned and operated by Cardinal Cogen, a subsidiary of General Electric. Stanford used about 60% of the electrical power with the balance sold to PG&E and 80% of the low-grade waste heat. This was distributed as low-pressure steam to campus and hospital buildings for comfort and domestic water heating, and to Stanford's Chilled Water Plant for steam powered chillers. The plant was closed 1 Apr 2015 and sold to Stanford for $1.

Construction started in early 2001. As part of a 2005 settlement with Mirant Services LLC, PG&E took ownership of the project and re-started construction in Jan 2007. COD was on 4 Jan 2009.

Quick facts: This new GT was dedicated on 4 Apr 2012. The $19mn installation uses digester gas from 75mn gpd of wastewater plus truckloads of other organic waste materials including restaurant grease, cheese and poultry wastes, and winery wastewater. The GT was added to a set of three 2.15-MW Enterprise gas gensets (online in 191, to the right in the photo) which should enable the WTP to become the first in the nation to produce enough energy from organic waste to export to the grid. After the digestion process is complete, remaining biosolds are used as a soil amendment for non-food crops or landfilled.

Kiewit was awarded the EPC contract in Jul 2007 and construction started in Feb 2008 following CEC final approval in Dec 2007. The plant was built with $330mn of debt financing. These are the first LMS100 machines in California. Panoche was named a Power magazine Top Plant in 2010

Quick facts: In 2003, Turlock Irrigation District and the Merced Irrigation District formed the Walnut Energy Center Authority to finance, construct, and operate this combined-cycle plant. In April 2004, the WECA issued $201mn in tax-exempt and taxable revenue bonds to finance construction. The plant uses treated effluent from the city's wastewater treatment plant for cooling and process water. The gas turbines have dry low-NOX combustors and the HRSGs use SCR for NOX control.
