Quick facts: In Mar2001, and after receiving environmental clearances, Bizkaia Energia selected a consortium of GE, ACS, and Sener to build the Amorebieta project. The plant was developed by ESB International on an 8ha site, 2.5km west of Amorebieta. In Aug 2002, RBS was selected as the preferred organizing bank for €700mn of finance facilities. In Oct 2004, Gas & Power Investment (GPI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Osaka Gas, signed an agreement for the €73mn acquisition of a 50% stake in the operating company. The project began final commissioning in Jul 2005 and cost about €500mn. This was the first internationally-owned IPP to open in Spain. In May 2014, ESB and Osaka Gas sold their shares to an affiliate of ArcLight Capital Partners LLC.

Quick facts: In Jun 2000, BP Power said it would move forward with the Bahia de Bizkaia power project in Zierbena near Bilbao. Environmental clearance was obtained in Dec 2000. In addition to the power plant, BP contracted with Bouyges for a 2.75bcm regasification facility, an LNG import terminal, and a total of 300,000m³ of storage capacity. In sum, the scheme represented the then-largest industrial investment ever in Basque Country. Teaming with BP were EVE, lberdrola, and Repsol YPF, each with a 25% stake. Mott McDonald was owner’s engineer. In Feb 2003, €690mn of financing was agreed with nine banks led by RBS. The plant was officially opened by King Juan Carlos in Feb 2003.
