Quick facts: In 1994, Stadtwerke Gera decided to replace two old brown-coal fired CHP plants with modern gas-fired plant. ABB Turbinen GmbH was chosen as lead contractor for the Gera Nord CHP plant and the Gera Sud heating plant. Kraftwerke Gera is a 50.1:49.9 joint venture of Stadtwerke Gwera AG and Electrabel.

Quick facts: The new plant allowed the closure of two 33yr old CHP steam sets. MTU has a maintenance contract for 50,000 operating hours. Depressurized steam is condensed in two heat condensers which generate about 80 MMt. Total thermal efficiency of the two CCGT blocks is around 85%.
