Quick facts: Amstetten was commissioned in the summer of 2006 as a joint venture of SWH and Umdasch AG, a manufacturer of shopfittings which will supply about a third of the total fuel supply from waste timber products. Österreichische Bundesforste AG, will provide the balance with chipped forestry residues. Annual output is expected to be 40,000 MWh of electricity and 80,000 MWh of heat, of which about 65% will be delivered to Umdasch and the remaining portion delivered to the district heating network.

Quick facts: The first units at Linz Mitte went online in 1970. These have now been retired and replaced by a 105-MW combined-cycle block in 2004 and the new biomass power plant. One of the world's then-largest thermal water storage tanks was also built. The 183m tall stack is one of the tallest structures in Austria.

Quick facts: This biomass CHP is a JV of Energie AG and EVN, which each provided a third of the equity with the remainder secured from bank loans. The site is on the border of Lower Austria and Upper Austria and the facility supplies industrial users and residential users in Steyr and Ramingdorf with heat. Construction began in fall 2011. Fuel is chipped wood from forestry management operations in a radius of about 40km.
